Representatives of the Arab League gathered in Cairo on Wednesday, April 24, for an emergency meeting aimed at addressing the escalating conflict in Gaza. The meeting was prompted by the recent United States veto of a United Nations resolution seeking to grant Palestine full membership status.
The Arab League expressed strong disapproval of the US veto, which thwarted Palestine’s longstanding aspiration for full UN recognition. Despite receiving 12 votes in favor, the resolution was vetoed by the US, with the United Kingdom and Switzerland abstaining.
During the session, the chairman voiced disappointment, emphasizing that the US veto contradicted efforts toward achieving a two-state solution. Mauritania’s representative to the Arab League, Hussein Sidi Abdellah Deh, stressed the importance of a sustainable political solution that respects the rights of the Palestinian people and supports the establishment of an independent state within the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The emergency meeting was convened in the wake of a tragic incident where Israeli airstrikes targeted aid workers in Gaza, resulting in the loss of at least seven lives. This event led to a suspension of food deliveries to Palestinians who are on the brink of starvation.
