In a significant turn of events, over 65 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) have opted out of the upcoming nationwide protest spearheaded by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). Under the banner of the Coalition of Civil Society Organizations Forum, these groups cite concerns over potential infiltration by criminal elements as their primary reason for withdrawal.
Originally slated for February 27 and 28, the protest aimed to shed light on various issues plaguing the Nigerian workforce. However, the CSOs fear that allowing the protest to proceed amidst the current security climate could exacerbate existing challenges faced by Nigerians, potentially leading to public unrest and disorder.
In a joint statement issued by the Coordinator and Secretary of the CSOs, Comrade Buba Ibrahim Mohammed and Comrade George Phillips, respectively, the groups underscored the need for caution. They stressed the importance of acknowledging the economic hardships endured by ordinary citizens, particularly workers, while expressing reluctance to endorse a movement that could jeopardize national stability.
Instead of advocating for protest action, the CSOs advocate for intensified dialogue and collaboration with the federal government to address workers’ grievances. They maintain that constructive engagement offers a more viable path towards resolving issues without risking further instability.
It is imperative to recognize that the CSOs’ withdrawal from the planned protest does not diminish the validity of the concerns raised by workers. The groups remain steadfast in their commitment to finding peaceful and inclusive avenues for addressing socio-economic challenges faced by Nigerians.
